We have been vacationing on IOP forever. I cannot believe our family has never been to this hidden gem. Perhaps, it is the name? I always assumed it was a sandwich spot. In August, after reviewing Yelp like I always do, I spotted rave reviews so I called for a last minute reservation and was able to book one at 7:30. I have to admit this was a little scary. Another bad assumption on my part. Upon arriving we were promptly greeted and seated. The sever appeared immediately. The ambiance is really quaint. For those of you familiar with the show, Fixer Upper, the decor matches that rustic home- like feel. We went with our children ages 9 and 11. As you know, it is always hard to please this age group. After ordering drinks and appetizers, which were amazing, our dinner was served. I had the Grilled Tuna cooked to perfection, my husband had the whole fish special and my son had the Pan-Fried Flounder. All through the meal my 11 year old was gushing about this fish and how it was the best thing he had ever eaten. He was asking for the recipe and giving compliments to the chef. The next thing you know, the chef appears at our table and chatted for awhile. The way our son was acting, you would think a movie star was in the room. We followed all this up with what also tuned out to be the best dessert ever. The Hummingbird Cake and Peanut Butter Cream Pie. It has been a month and our son asks to go back all the time. We cannot believe this place has been here since 1986 and we have never been there. It just goes to show, don't judge a book by its cover or its name.

What a wonderful treat. Everyone is on their game here. They're doing a brisk business but no one in our large party ever felt neglected. My bro snatched up the last swordfish special and it was the envy of everyone else at the table. Our server was charming and attentive. Our water glasses were never empty (a bonus when that was all anyone was drinking). They put together a nice caesar salad to go for a family member who could not attend. And, you guys, the red velvet cake. GET THIS. Truly orgasmic.

For me, this place was just OK. I am not much of a fish person, and the group I was with was going to Isle Of Palms Beach for the afternoon, and we stopped here for lunch as our original choice could not accomate as for the amount of people in our group. As I mentioned (at least for lunch) the vast majority (at least the sandwiches) were some type of fish dishes. I was able to get a grilled chicken sandwich - but did not realize the one thing I did know that was in the sandwich was a variation of cheese. Not being much of a cheese person that comes on grilled sandwiches (as it is usually melted cheeses), I was surprised it was more of a sauce type garnishment that had some kick to it which made the sandwhich taste better. Given that the majority of the dishes were fish, the interior was set to a Mariners type of decor. Also, as someone else mentioned, this shop is nestled in the strip mall where Harrold Teeters is. I believe this place is only open for lunch and dinner, with it being closed for a couple of hours between the lunch and dinner rushes. With us eating here at lunch, the majority of the choices were sandwiches, so not sure if there is more of a "dinner type" entree choice for dinner.

It's in the shopping center next to Harris Teeter and looks small from the outside. Inside it looks rather elegant and high class. I felt under-dressed for sure and almost walked out, but the manager assured us I was just fine. The food is well prepared, and very good. Prices are what I would expect for being close to the beach on Isle of Palms / Sullivans Island. I had just a simple Turkey Club (one of the least expensive items and perfect for a light work lunch). They have many more, not-as-boring-as-me menu items, like crab cake sliders, shrimp and grits, etc. Service was very good. The waitress was friendly and talkative, but not in a bad or intrusive way. Her recommendations were spot-on! I would like to return and try the more adventurous menu items.

I'm just going one star because this place is rated entirely too high. We ate lunch here for our first meal out at the island and it was terrible. Our fried shrimp were all overcooked and tough. The scallops were tiny and not really covered with any breading by the time they got to me (fell off on the plate). The veggie of the day side we had was sqaush covered in some sort of marinara sauce (huh?) and it was undercooked. We had a group of 5 and even our 2 year old didn't like his meal. Such a waste of a meal out on our vacation. Many other suitable places that are a lot better in the area. Should've known when the average age of the other 3 tables in the place at lunch rush was probably 93.

We debated over a place for dinner and we are all glad this is where we chose to go. The place is relatively small so I would recommend a reservation. This place has been in the same shopping center for years but was recently renovated as part of the whole shopping center makeover. We came on a Sunday night in the off season. We were promptly seated and drink orders taken. They have a specials menu that includes specialty cocktails. They also have a few beers on tap. The menu is local fresh seafood and a few non-seafood choices. They offer homemade bread while you check out the menu and it is worth every carb! A few people in our party hade the homemade lobster ravioli with shrimp in a red cream sauce. The ravioli was cooked perfectly and stuffed with lobster. The shrimp portion was also very generous. We also had the fried shrimp and scallops which were very lightly breaded and perfectly fried. The filet and crab cake was also delicious. We were too stuffed for dessert but I would love to go back and try a few. The table next to ours got this huge piece of peanut butter pie that looked amazing. We will be back!

We decided to grab a quick dinner at this place after accidentally getting lost on the way back to downtown. While we were skeptical of the strip mall location, the food was pretty decent! Service was friendly by the hostess and especially our server. We went with the Salmon BLT, Crab Cakes, and the Daily Fish Special. All of the items were tasty and fresh (including the Succotash we got on the side). Unfortunately, we found a small hair on a lemon wedge garnish which was unappetizing but not a deal breaker. Overall, a surprisingly tasty and casual dinner spot! The desserts looked tasty, but we were too full to try them.

Long Island Cafe is a favorite! Interesting and varied menu. Carefully prepared and presented food and friendly service. Fair prices. All they lack is a view, sad to say. Definitely deserves a spot in your rotation along with the "beachier" places in the area.

Excellent service and delicious food. The bread pudding was to die for. We tried crab cakes; spinach salad topped with oysters, and combination of scallops and oysters. All were delicious.

Long Island Cafe keeps getting better! Very pleased with the new chef and pastry chef! Loved the homemade cavatelli... possibly the best house-made pasta I've ever had in a restaurant! ( my father's family is Calabrian, so that's a huge claim for this Pasta-vore) Simply dressed with local asparagus. Perfect. Lowcountry Iced Tea is a Long Island Iced Tea made with Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka and really tasty. One and your done. Loved it. We fell in love with Dean, our waiter and extraordinary dessert chef. His Red Velvet Cake was truly inspired and the Chocolate Ganache Flourless Cake was wonderfully infused with orange essence and the texture was heavenly. Shrimp and Grits were excellent. Caesar Salad was expertly dressed and the fried oysters were delicately seasoned and perfectly fried. This place has to be my new favorite even though I've been coming here off and on for 20 years. This latest incarnation can't be beat.

Nestled between the mini-Harris Teeter and Pizza Hut, the Long Island Cafe was a bit of a surprise (in a good way!). My husband and I decided to stop by for a quick bite before getting ready for a wedding. We were both in gym clothes and were a bit under-dressed for the restaurant. Luckily, they had just opened and we were the only ones in the place at that time. The server was very welcoming and brought us waters. We ordered the She-Crab soup, he had the Salmon BLT and I had the Grilled Tuna - both with White Cheddar Grits. The soup was rich and creamy and came with sherry, in case we wanted to add it to the top. We tasted it both ways and decided it was good without it. Both sandwiches were a good size and because we each liked both so much, we traded off half. The Salmon BLT came on wheat toast with fresh basil mayo. The salmon was light and tasty. The Grilled Tuna was lightly grilled to my request of rare and came on wheat toast with lettuce, tomato, and basil mayo. It was also seasoned perfectly. The side of white cheddar grits was rich and creamy with cheese.

This is a 3.5 star review. First, the location is sneaky. The shopping center is under renovation, so it's a hidden gem. Next, the pros. THIS. MENU. The food is creative and so, so, so yummy. Super heavy props for that. The sad cons. Service was just ok. Our waitress forgot our drink orders and was very slow in bringing refills. The food took forever to come out-- we're pretty sure our waitress didn't check on it because people who came in well after we ordered got their food 10 minutes before we did. The mimosas and bloody marys were just ok. There was not enough alcohol in either, BUT, they were cheap so we didn't feel particularly slighted. In summary, GO. Just don't go in a rush.

This is one of the favorite places to eat on IOP. The food is always good and the staff is always friendly. My favorite dish is that parmesan crusted salmon and the Brussel sprout appetizer is out of this world. I highly recommend coming here for the fresh seafood dishes and the chef does a pasta dish special that is always good.

The staff was very friendly this restaurant is in a strip mall and looks a little deceiving but really worth going in. The decor is great and the food is very good. I had the Parmesan crusted salmon and it was delicious and cooked to perfection. i also had the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer, soooo good! The waiter was a bit stiff or I would have scored this place a 5

Loved this spot. Found it on Yelp and took our friends. Great she crab soup and the shrimp and Grits were fantastic. In a little strip mall so easy to miss but a must try!

Amazing food and prices! Love the shrimp and grits---always delicious. The roasted Brussels sprouts were great. The blackened red fish was so tasty! Not a bite left on our plates. Save room for the Key Lime pie! We ordered take out tonight as we had a fussy baby and the food was perfect - so glad the quality has remained the same over the past few years! See you next April!

Amazing local seafood. Creative dishes with local ingredients. Excellent service. Takes reservations and our table was ready when we arrived. Offers traditional fried seafood to gourmet pan fried wreck fish. Traditional southern sides from sliced tomatoes to Yukon gold mashed potatoes. Will def go back soon!

Thanks to Restaurant.com , we snagged a $25 gift cert to this place for vacation and used it tonight on our 2nd night on the island. Located in the back of a strip mall right over the IOP Connector bridge, I am really glad that this place chose to do a Restaurant.com certificate because otherwise, we wouldn't of ever seen it. Our really nice waitress, Leslie, let us know that this place is under new ownership in 2013 and they're upping their advertising - from someone who has been coming to IOP for years, I can say right here that it's working! When you walk in, the ambiance is nice (although so different than the outside of the place!) - white linen table clothes, nice music and beautiful art line the walls. Leslie, our waitress, was top notch and was a total 5 star part of our dinner. The app we chose was their crab cakes ($7.99 for 2) and while they were seasoned well, the shredded crab and mounds of stuffing made for a pretty forgettable start but the warm, fresh bread that got brought out with it was delish! Nice and crusty with a whipped butter for spreading. For my meal, I got the Salmon BLT and it was OMG amazing. A basil mayo, 2 slices of amazing grain bread, perfectly cooked bacon and a fresh filet of salmon, made this meal a total 5 star experience and is making me want to go back right now for another! I had the daily vegetable with it which ended up being a squash and onion medley which was also well seasoned and flavorful. My hot date got the mahi mahi with garlic mashed potatoes and the squash medley and all was done very well - especially the potatoes! Only negative we thought was the mustard sauce that came on the mahi was a bit on the smokey side and not quite a dijon or stone ground sauce like we were expecting. For the grand finale, I was stoked on the Hummingbird Cake that they have on this yelp "view the menu" option. Sadly, that was the old owners so no Hummingbird cake but we instead went with a frozen peanut butter pie. In the famous words of Bill Clinton, "I did not inhale that slice of pie" but I did think about it. Very good and a big enough slice to split.

This place has done wonders since changing hands last year. The chef/owner truly cares about the food and works very hard to please everyone. We have only been in for dinner, twice, but have been happy both times. The beet and goat cheese salad with preserved lemon was delicious and enough to split between two people. The crab cakes were just what I expected and my wife's salmon was perfectly cooked. We didn't make a reservation either time, but I would expect that you would need to now as it's always busy. This isn't just a tourist destination, so don't think of it as that. We will certainly be back as we love to see what the night's features are. This place keeps on improving with the current changes.

Just went there the other day with a large group..I would not have picked it! Service was wonderful!!!! A totally different experience and still fantastic food. We were a group of about 30 people and the waitstaff was efficient and extremely hospitable. What I expected from southern hospitality.

Great neighborhood seafood restaurant with a Low Country flair. Better even than the food is the hospitality. The waitress and chef were wonderfully accommodating of my son's food allergies and even cooked some food we brought with us for him. Made us feel welcome and at home.

I finally had a chance to go to this quaint little establishment just outside of Isle of Palm in a strip mall. The restaurant has nice atmosphere and a very friendly staff. The pace was very nice as they allowed us to relax and enjoy our experience. Unfortunately, the food was dry and lacked the taste I was hoping for. I had a crab and pecan stuffed chicken with rice pilaf. The selections are very unique but the quality of the food was not up to par.

Loved it! The shrimp and grits are excellent, as is the dessert menu. The service was a little slow but otherwise outstanding. My 10-year-old was with me, and the waiter was so good with her. There's a small bar, but this is mainly a restaurant. I liked the variety available on the menu, and they're very accommodating to requests to alter dishes. I highly recommend this place for those looking for a quiet, casual meal on the island.

Our dinner plans changed at the last minute. We called and they could accommodate a party of 5 people at that last minute. Don't let the fact that it's next to a grocery store in a strip mall fool you. The service and food were great. We had calamari for an appetizer. Very good. We had the grilled salmon, parmesan encrusted salmon and the stuffed shrimp. The entrees and sides were very good. Very flavorful. The prices are very reasonable considering the quality and portions. We liked the ambiance of this restaurant. We would definitely go again.

We had an absolutely amazing experience here. Our blackened red fish and parm crusted salmon were phenomenal! The pastry chef discussed technique and offered us samplings. Prices very reasonable for the size and quality. Make this your next planned night out.

Long Island Cafe has wonderful food and the staff is always friendly and attentive. I have been to this restaurant several times for both lunch and dinner and have enjoyed every visit. The atmosphere is pretty good -- they do what they can with it given the strip mall location. I also wish they had an outdoor eating area. If you want good seafood on IOP, Long Island Cafe has some of the best around. Plus, they have their own pastry chef for dessert... lots of great options!

the menu isnt extensive, but offers a wonderful combination of local standards and delicious seafood dishes. simple, graceful delivery with every plate. fairly priced for the quality, but the kids menu makes a large party able to enjoy a nice dinner while the kids can choose between classic kid standards at a low price or go with the regular menu. shrimp and grits are fantastic. to top it off, the owner and staff are delightful, hands on, making sure the service is fast, personal and very warm. a wonderful and somewhat unexpected delight. if you are on the island for a few days definitely make some time for this wonderful little restuarant

Labor Day lunch with the girls was everything and more. We had 4 different dishes: crab cakes, shrimp & grits, salmon blt & rare tuna on a salad. Each was a 10. We sealed the deal with a piece of key lime pie. We have never been dissappointed. Be sure to remember lunch ends @ 2:30.

Great food and great service. Rather small restaurant but we had no trouble getting a table for 12. Service was very good. Food was delicious. Plenty of seafood options and most everything seemed locally sourced. Prices were very reasonable.

I grew up in Charleston and spent much of my life there, but never had an opportunity to try the Long Island Cafe when it's original owners ran it. I think that I can safely say, however, that there's no way the original iteration can even compare to what it is now. I would like to preface my review by saying that I am good friends with the co-owner and head chef, Ravi. If you think that makes my review less honest... *shrugs* I was back in town for one of my best friend's Birthdays and we decided to try the new restaurant. What's funny is that Ravi and I both cook and realized we've never actually eaten each others' food. I was actually more nervous that I wouldn't think the food was good than that my friend wouldn't enjoy his birthday dinner. I have to say that I was blown away. First of all the location: It's one of those restaurants that is almost out of place, it isn't freestanding, rather it's set within a strip mall on IOP. And, as many people have said, there is construction and a parking lot being paved at the moment. This is obviously a temporary issue and should not deter anyone from eating here. Also, when it's finished there will be more outside seating! It's very close to the beaches, Wild Dunes, and you can smell the salt in the air as you walk into the restaurant. Personally I think the almost hidden location just adds to its charm. Charleston is a beach town, and it's very laid back. It's great that this restaurant mimics the charleston lifestyle, it's very casual in the decor, attire, and attitudes of everyone. The food: My biggest complain about the long island cafe is its name. Cafe has no business in the name of the restaurant because the food isn't even remotely in the same class as a cafe's food would be. While I agree the atmosphere is very casual and cafe like, the food is something you find in some of the most expensive, exclusive, and nicest restaurants you could possibly dine in. The braised pork and gnocchi was simply amazing, everything about it from plating to taste is exquisite and was when I first realized just what level of quality we were going to find in the food. Literally everything form the appetizers to dessert was amazing. The zucchini fries were phenomenal. The bar is well stocked, and we ordered a variety of entrees which we all shared. From Cheeseburger to steak to pasta, it is amazing. Dining at the Long Island Cafe was one of the most pleasant culinary surprises I've ever had in my life. It's about on par with discovering La Petite Auberge in Atlanta, GA. My hat is off to Ravi and the rest of the great staff at the Long Island Cafe. I cannot recommend them enough for lunch or dinner, whether your intentions are a casual meal with friends or a romantic dinner. I hope they are around for a very long time.

We are a long time customer. However, around October 2012, owner for 26 yr's sold out to 2 people. New owners changed menu and staff. Great food. Fried shrimp is still the best in Charleston. We always take our out of town guests there.

Hands down the best place to eat in the area! The food is exquisite and always very fresh. Servings are plentiful and I always leave with a smile on my face and a full belly. I especially like the Salmon BLT for lunch. This place is miles ahead of other restaurants let alone the pervious owners which I won't even get into. The service is equally impeccable. The staff is friendly and warm and they always get your order right. I've told the servers the food was excellent and to give my regards to the chef and he actually came out to say hello and tell me about the ingredients he used. I believe he is European as well as culinary trained and has been the private chef for some pretty Influential people.

Apparently the Long Island has changed hands and has lost a bit in the process. This is where we usually stop for lunch when we first arrive. She crab soup and either the crab cakes or the dolphin sandwich. I ordered the soup and later was told the cook was heating it, so much for fresh. It was thick and lumpy, not what i had been use to. I am sure the construction is not helping traffic. Will hope it achieves it former glory

TERRIBLE SERVICE!!! Have been coming to IOP for years, and will NEVER go back to this place! Our table was clearly an annoyance to our server, who was obviously having a terrible day- which was quickly taken out on the restaurant's guests. The drinks were over-priced and watered down, the orders were misplaced by the staff repeatedly, and any request or question was immediately shut-down by the server (did I mention that she was annoyed that she had a table!?! And needed to take a shower and wear clean clothes - such an unappetizing appearance!) The food was basic- yet bland. The best part of the experience was the host/buser who ran around like crazy to fill up our water and bread (the best food and drinks placed in front of us!)

  • Ellen W.

We didn't think this experience was going to end on a good note but am glad that it did. Our server started off by being snappy to us which always seems to set the mood for the rest of the meal. However, she redeemed herself towards the end of the meal and the owner came over as well and both were great. Food was good and will go back.

This place is awesome. It's mellow and kind of quiet/romantic. Food is so so so good. Best she-crab soup in town. HANDS DOWN. The people that work there seem like they're happy to help, happy to be there. I need that AND good food if I'm going out. By far, my favorite island restaurant.

This review is not about the food but about the service three of us received today at lunch. Not only did it take 25 minutes to get our order in but it then took another 20 minutes to receive our food (only sandwiches and a very expensive bottle of wine.) We had to ask for our bill after being there 1-1/2 hours and the waitress proceeded to be very rude. She did not ask if we wanted the bill divided and presented one bill with the wine being priced $5.00 higher than what was on the menu. When I mentioned this to her she became very angry and said it wasn't her fault but was the computer's fault. She returned with 3 bills practically yelling at once (loud enough for all of the other people in the restaurant to turn around). Then she stormed off sending another member of the personnel to finish taking our credit cards, etc. She was probably the rudest and loudest waitress I have ever encountered in the City of Charleston and should definitely not be working in a restaurant until she gets anger management help. I have eaten at Long Island Café many times over the years and could not believe what happened today. None of us will be back until the staff is replaced with pleasant people.

Highly recommend. Some of the best fried fish and baked salmon I have ever had. Calamari was delicious, and my daughters cheeseburger tasted like my husband had grilled it himself. The white cheddar grits could win an award. There wasn't anything that wasn't good here....it's a great little secret. You MUST get the cheesecake....it is TO DIE FOR!!!

Seriously lacking in ambiance - and we were just there for lunch. Needs a makeover of the decor and the menu. Maybe in dimmer light it would look less .... dated? plain? The food was fine - we both chose from the 8 or so lunch specials (really? so many specials? plus a fairly extensive menu?). I wanted to like this place, and I certainly didn't dislike it, but nothing made me want to go back.

We had dinner here on a Monday night and it was so enjoyable. The restaurant feels like a friendly nieghborhood spot. It was clean and welcoming. Our server, Leslie, was personable and helpful, but not intursive. There were 3 people in our party. We each ordered very different meals and each was excellent. The only negetive of the entire evening was the french fries, just not to our tables liking. We will definitly return soon.

Great time at this cute little place. Leslie was a great server. Food was better than average. Didn't think the crab cakes were the best but the grouper special and she crab soup was great.

After dining here for eight plus years I am sad to say that I will not be returning. Had lunch today that was horrible. For starters I always order the she crab soup - today's soup had no crab or if it did it was hidden amongst the many potatoes. For my main I always order the salmon blt - they have changed the bread that it is served on (very thick & tasteless) to hide the sliver piece of salmon. Raising prices is one thing but cutting this many corners is another. Recommendations get old chef back. Until I will be dining at Morgan Creek.

My wife and I have been dining here for years and have recommended it to our friends; however tonight's experience ended a long relationship. The service was OK and the shrimp, oysters and salad were good. The baked potato was cold, hard and must have been baked yesterday. I should have refused it immediately, but tried to eat it anyway. Two bites of the potato ended what should have been a good dining experience. Told the wait staff when presented with the check. She said she would let the kitchen staff know. There was no further comment from anyone and to add insult to injury I was charged extra for the two potatoes. I will not be back or recommend this restaurant to my friends.

It's a little place tucked away in a strip mall by Red and White grocery store just off the bridge. They've got some very nice items on the menu here that I haven't seen elsewhere. I like the crab and pecan stuffed chicken breast in brown sauce, and I've enjoyed their simple but satisfying salmon BLT sandwich. And, of course, the desserts are nice--hummingbird cake, crème brulee, etc. The only drawback is that they seem to put on airs a little bit here, perhaps due to their clientele on Isle of Palms. It's a fairly small place, but they'll ask you if you have reservations when there is no one else in there. And the prices seem just a little high for what they offer. Still, you can have a really nice lunch or dinner here and enjoy yourself.

    (4)
  • Lindsey B.

have enjoyed it for years, service usually good, bread is excellent most entree's are well prepared, lunch the BLT is a clever and good choice ... I guess it is still on the menu, I have not tried it in a year. Recent supper was first class.

From what I could gather, this place is under new ownership? I went there 3/27/13 and thought it was great. The new owners must be working hard on it because the place looks brand new and the furnishings and paint colors are modern and fresh. Anyway, I sat at the bar because I was traveling alone. The bar seats maybe 6 people. Small, but cozy, and the bartender was really nice and friendly. I ordered the parmesean encrusted salmon, vegetables, and garlic mashed potatoes and it was delicious! I was a clean plater, haha! I also had creme brulee for dessert and it was yummy, too! I would definitely go back to this place if I'm in town again. Clean, nice decor, tasty food, not snobby, good service, and relaxing.

Having eaten at all the top restaurants on the Isle this week, this place had the best quality food and friendliest service hands down. Atmosphere is lacking, but the food makes up for it.

This is a favorite stop for lunch for my annual golfing trip to Wild Dunes. The mustard dolphin fish sandwich is tasty and the she crab soup is a must.

Went in around 2:15 and the waiter said 'you better hurry, the kitchen is closing soon'. From then, we felt like we were imposing! Ordered a couple of sandwiches which were mostly 'meh'. Not awful but not great either. If you are on the island and don't want to hike back over the connector, then pop in, just don't expect too much.

One word - rude! Called to place a takeout order after looking at the menu online. The guy on the phone was so rude it was unbelievable. It's like he was completely put out by just having to speak with me. I didn't order anything because he was such a jackass about answering a couple of simple questions. Glad I didn't waste my time actually going there in person. Go to Sullivan's on Sullivan's Island instead - awesome food and very friendly service.

The Long Island Cafe is a little hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant that, due to its location, caused us to have pretty low expectations. We drove past it for most of our week in Isle of Palms, heading to other restaurants on IOP or in Mt. Pleasant, but by the end of the week we were sort-of tired and so we decided to give the Long Island Cafe a try. We were really pleasantly surprised at how good the food was, and we'd definitely go back again. The restaurant is small, probably doesn't seat more than 50 or so, but at the time we arrived the dinner crowd hadn't yet settled in and so we had no trouble getting seated. (By the time we left, the place was packed.) My only complaint (as someone else noted) is that the wait staff is sort-of... odd. Snooty doesn't quite capture it, but it was definitely a different vibe from the other restaurants that we visited during our vacation. Our waiter wouldn't make eye contact, but would instead stare off into the distance as he recited the specials, asked us if we needed anything else, etc. They also seemed a little short-staffed; as the restaurant started to fill up with diners it was clear that they (the waiters) were having trouble keeping up with all the business.
